Tochukwu Chukwueke is an inventor. The quest for a place to test his designs and utilize his creative ability led Tochukwu to set up the first indigenous makerspace in the most unlikely of places in Nigeria – Aba, South East Nigeria. Having built Nigeria’s first indigenous makerspace, he shared his journey whilst making the case that makerspaces are critical infrastructure for Nigeria.

Product Design Challenge, CAD Class

Students undergoing training for Computer Aided Design (CAD) participated in their first product design challenge.


The challenge was to design a functional product that was original and innovative, using local materials. It should also be produced easily at CIC and will not cost more than 2000 naira.

Eight teams participated in the defence and designed the following products:
1. Curtain Hanger
2. Cup Rack
3. Office Organizer
4. Film Rack
5. Makeup Box
6. Shoe Rack
7. Portable Touch
8. Smart Phone Desk Stand

Product Design Challenge.

Students undergoing training for Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM) participated in the first product design challenge.

The challenge was to design a functional product that was original and innovative, used local materials, could be produced easily within CIC, and to cost not more than 2000 Naira

A total of six teams participated in the challenge, and today was the presentation before a panel of two seasoned engineer judges rating the products based on originality, manufacturability as well as other technical factors

You won’t believe what these teams came up with after a few days brainstorming and design. It was impossible to believe the level of technicality that went into each design, as they were presented to the panel of judges.
